There's some kind of heavy metal karaoke/Ladyfest benefit at 305 South
on Friday the 7th. Sign up fast if you expect to get yourself in there
before Bjorkback snaps up all the spaces (not that you could top him
onstage, mind you).
Otherwise:
Thursday, October 6
Gang of Four [http://www.gangoffour.co.uk/], Morningwood
[http://www.morningwoodrocks.com], Men, Women & Children
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Friends who've seen this Gang of Four reunion tour don't so much rant
& rave as they do just stand there with mouth hanging open in an
attempt to convey how freaking awesome it was. Or so I gather; this is
going to be my first chance to see it.
I pity the openers; it's gonna be a tough crowd.
Thursday, October 6
The Rosebuds [http://www.therosebuds.com/], Spader
Kings, Raleigh
The Rosebuds have a dynamite new album out, "Birds Make Good
Neighbors," and this is a CD release party for it. It's moodier & more
textural but there's a strange mournfully joyous energy that has stuck
with me. No sophomore slump, no way.
Thursday, October 6
Les Angles Morts [http://www.lesanglesmorts.org/]
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Thursday, October 6
Calla [http://users.vei.net/eacherhundreds/eh101-calla.htm],
Celebration [http://www.beggars.com/us/news/?read=new-4ad-signing],
Hotel Lights
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
Friday, October 7
The Physics of Meaning [http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/], Eyes to
Space [http://www.eyestospace.net/], Senryu
[http://www.senryutheband.com/]
Bickett Gallery, Raleigh
Physics of Meaning is the new band of Daniel Hart (ex-Go Machine) plus
2/3ds of the phenomenal Raleigh indierock band Ticonderoga, plus
cellist Ann Polesnak of Utah!.
Eyes to Space are uber-science-nerrd-geek prog/rock/pop.
Friday, October 7
S.C.O.T.S. [http://www.scots.com/]
Lincoln Theater, Raleigh
The Lincoln Theater used to be a joint called Gilley's, and at that
time it featured a bar in the middle of the room with bizarre
wood-and-rope swings in place of barstools. I hear they've ripped them
out. Pity; seems like they would've been quintessentially Southern
Culture on the Skids.
Friday, October 7
My Dear Ella [http://www.mydearella.com], Fashion Design
[http://fashiondesignband.com/], On Three
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
I think I read that On Three was the new side-project of Fake Swedish
lead guitarist Eric Haugen. My Dear Ella are the slightly shoegazery
wall-of-sound rockband of a guy named Eric Wallen, whom you might have
seen lately gazing out from behind a wall-of-hair & playing guitar
with Ben Davis. Fashion Design you know by now, right? Two guys, two
girls; three or four different countries-of-origin; the most
enthusiastic & friendly drummer in town; vintage echoey/chorussy
80s-UK-invasion/4AD-style pop/rock.
Saturday, October 8
The Bellrays [http://www.thebellrays.com]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Saturday, October 8
Lud [http://www.smithlevelrecords.com], Bringerer, The Young Idea
[http://www.theyoungidea.com]
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
Lud have played a handful of shows lately; does this mean they've
finished their new album, or that they're so far from done that
they're playing some shows to work the kinks out? I hope it's the
former, but I'll take either as long as I finally manage to get out to
see them; they're my favorite great-sweeping-instrumental cut-with
anti-anthemic-anthems local rockband.
Bringerer are now (hard as it is to imagine) Ron Liberti's only band;
he & Shawn & Amy & Bart are making screwy indie-rock that owes equally
to 90s indie-rock, Cheap Trick, and Brian Eno's early-70s screwball
solo rock albums.
The Young Idea have the black suits, the Rickenbackers, and the
pissed-off snarl of The Jam; they're still working on the hooks & the
chops, and it's beginning to pay off.
Sunday, October 9
The Like [http://www.ilikethelike.com/], Kings of Leon
[http://www.kingsofleon.com/]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Kings of Leon have one of those so-corny-it-must-be-true stories:
three sons of an itinerant preacher, never listened to secular music
until a few years ago; now they're resurrecting bad-boy Southern Rock
one-more-time. But then you probably read the same shitty weekly
entertainment rags that I [surreptitiously] do, so you're already
way-too-aware of all that.
Sunday, October 9
Monsonia [http://www.monsonia.com], Bellini
[http://www.insound.com/mp3/searchmp3.cfm?searchby=bellini], Mono
[http://www.canal.ne.jp/~sound/mono/e_bio.html]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Monsonia are a great taut mathy indierock power-trio. The URLs in the
database for the other two bands are different than these, so click
both: [http://www.age.vu/%7Esound/mono/] Mono &
[http://www.snowingsun.com/] Bellini.
Wednesday, October 12
Dig Shovel Dig [http://www.digshoveldig.com/], RC Pro-Am
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Thursday, October 13
Jett Rink [http://www.jett-rink.com/], Work Clothes
[http://www.bullfightparty.org], Kerbloki [http://www.kerbloki.com/],
L in Japanese [http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/L_in_Japanese/]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
This is a benefit for longtime Carrboro alderman Alex Zaffron, who is
running for Carrboro mayor against fellow alderman & longtime local
political activist (and youngest NC elected official ever, back in the
day) Mark Chilton. I don't live in Carrboro anymore so I don't know
diddly about the issues in the race, but I'll bet you can learn more
at [http://orangepolitics.org/elections-2005] orangepolitics.org.
Rockwise, you've got the new-wave/surf-inflected
synth-dance-spazz-rock of Jett Rink; the ever-growing (five members at
the Troika Fest) Work Clothes, who can still bring it down to a hush
when they wanna; the early-Beastie-ish party-rap of Kerbloki; and the
back-from-Paris new-album-in-tow intelligent hip-hop of L in
Japanese.
Thursday, October 13
Regina Hexaphone [http://www.reginahexaphone.com], Randy Whitt and the
Grits [http://www.randywhitt.com/], John Howie
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Catch up with the current state of
alt-country/country-rock/folk-rock/whatever in the Triangle, with the
$2 Pistols' John Howie, the loping country-rock of Sara (Shark Quest)
Bell's Regina Hexaphone, and Randy Whitt & his Grits.
Thursday, October 13
The Know [http://www.theknowrocks.com], Dig Shovel Dig
[http://www.digshoveldig.com/], RC Pro-Am
Kings, Raleigh
Friday, October 14
Jett Rink [http://www.jett-rink.com/], Robo Sapien
[http://www.gorobosapien.com/], Gerty [http://www.gerty.org], Spader,
The Physics of Meaning [http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/]
305 South, Durham
This is called MARV FEST: Benefit for Lymphoma & Lukemia Research; the
full lineup also includes Eyes to Space and an outfit called Jew(s) &
Catholic(s).
Friday, October 14
Analogue, Maple Stave [http://www.maplestave.com], Noncanon
Local 506, Chapel Hill
This is the latest installment in Local 506's "Local Bands Reunited"
series. Analogue were easily one of my favorite local bands of the
90s. They began in Wilmington but relocated to Raleigh & immediately
stunned anybody in town who cared about, well, a whole range of
things. Drumming, for one; Dave Cantwell played drums for Analogue,
right out front, flailing away with his soon-become-familiar mix of
precision and falling-off-stool. You've seen him do it in Cantwell
Gomez & Jordan. The difference? The average Analogue song was ~10
minutes long, and while everyone else in the band was playing
repetitive arpeggios or synth drones, Cantwell was more or less
obligated to thrash all-out the whole time.
At some point Dave left for [inter-]personal reasons, and while the
rest of the band soldiered on under the moniker Analogue II for
another couple of years (and one last excellent album), Analogue mkI
remained the gold standard. Don't miss this show.
