I just wanted to let jazz fans know that the Satoko
Fujii Four show at Reynolds Theater 8 p.m. Tuesday
night should not be missed. (Tickets are $15, call
684-4444 or go to www.duke.edu/web/dukeperfs).
Fujii is a brilliant pianist from Tokyo who chose to
play Durham as one stop a very brief tour of North
America with bandmates Natsuki Tamura (her husband) on
trumpet and well-known American rhythm section Mark
Dresser on bass and Jim Black on drums.
Their live labum "Live In Japan 2004" is at the
listening station at Durham's Offbeat Music if you
want to check it out.
Fujii has been compared to Cecil Taylor for her mix of
dissonant chord clusters and playful melodies, but
she'd much rather be compared to her biggest
influence, Bill Evans.
