The Alamance/Burlington Metro Region Adopts Gulfport Mississippi
Times-News to Provide Key to Coordination Efforts
The Times-News is putting its resources at the disposal of a gulf coast city devastated by hurricane Katrina, and challenges the rest of their community to do the same. The Times-News will be acting as the hub, providing countywide coordination, as efforts get under way to launch the Alamance/Burlington Metro Region’s “adoption” of Gulfport Mississippi, a city about the same size as Burlington. Their goals are two-fold; short-term immediate action, with no red tape, coupled with a sustained effort over the long haul. While obtaining financial contributions remains the first priority, to meet these goals, they are also seeking:
--Commitments from each municipality within their county, and support from businesses, churches, agencies,
and clubs
--Assistance in dispersing information throughout the community, so that everyone has an opportunity to contribute
--That businesses, churches, agencies, municipalities, and clubs designate an individual to act as the conduit for information into and out of their organization, regarding the adoption effort
--Assistance with needs assessment in the Gulfport region, which will include peer-to-peer contact, with specific gulf coast counterparts
--Donations of merchandise, services and manpower (for sorting, packing, etc.), once the specific needs of the Gulfport community have been assessed
--Creative ideas for supporting the Gulfport community throughout this crisis, including the adoption of specific businesses, schools, churches, agencies, etc. (peer-to-peer adoption will be strongly encouraged)
--Commitment to keeping this project top-of-mind for the long haul, and supporting it beyond the initial 12 months, at which time the national emergency organizations will be likely to pull out
