Lookit, I don't have time to build a website so Jeff Herrick can find rides to rockshows, but carpooling to rockshows is a *fine* idea. I met more than one of my favorite people via such a carpool, so I'm all in favor. My recommendation (until I *do* have time to build y'all a website) is to use this-here list. Or just walk:
Friday, September 2
Koufax [http://www.koufaxmusic.com/], Fashion Design
[http://fashiondesignband.com/], A Problem of Alarming Dimensions
[http://www.8088records.com/problemofalarmingdimensions/]
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
The other day I had this weird melody stuck in my head & it took me a
minute to realize that it was the A-side of the new Fashion Design 7",
which I'd only heard once but which clearly made an impression.
They've got a full-length due out later this fall; guard your brains.
Saturday, September 3
Morbid Ramblers
[http://www.hollowbunny.com/bands/morbidramblers.html], The Know
[http://www.theknowrocks.com], The Trousers, Electric Sunshine, Chrome
Plated Apostles [http://www.demonbeach.com]
Kings, Raleigh
This is all part of the [http://www.raleighrumble.com] Raleigh Rumble
"Mods vs Rockers" vintage motorcycle & scooter rally. Motorcycles &
scooters in the parking lot across from Kings from 11:00 a.m. til 6:00
or so, and then the following bands, maybe in this order:
Morbid Ramblers
Skull Buckle
The Know
The Trousers
Electric Sunshine
Chrome Plated Apostles
Morbid Ramblers feature ex-members of Pine State (as well as "Danzig"
and "Jesus Lizard" if you know-what-I-mean), and you'll just have to
go look at their website.
The Know are kinda like The Weather Jr. The Trousers are the new band
of Jim of the Tonebenders. Electric Sunshine are the new band of Eddie
Taylor (Loners, Big Joe).
Chrome Plated Apostles are Clif and Hunter of the Bad Checks, plus
Greg Adams (ex-Bedwetter, ex-Pipe) and one great local drummer or
another (variously, either the Checks' Rock Forbes, Fake Swedish's
Dave Perry, or the Loners' Chris Jones).
Saturday, September 3
Veronique Diabolique [http://www.veroniquediabolique.com/]
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Veronique Diabolique are the French-speaking Goth band from Durham. I
dunno how they're gonna make the trek from Durham to the Cave for this
early (7:00pm-ish) show; perhaps they've got their own personal
Renfield to drive the van & make sure the coffins are nailed tight.
Once they're inside the Cave, of course, the only trick is to keep
them from roosting upside-down in the corners.
Monday, September 5
American Aquarium
[http://www.clearchannelnewmusicnetwork.com/artist/americanaquarium],
Sweater Weather
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Tuesday, September 6
Dynamite Club [http://www.dynamiteclub.com/], In the Year of the Pig
[http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm], Rockets and Mortar
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Nightlight Sez Dynamite Club = "an insane Japanese-American meeting of
the minds. Tiny guitarist runs around the room solo-ing bared-ass, the
enormous drummer eventually pile-drives him. A spectacularly retarded
and brutal live act, you should see them at least once. ITYOTP =
angry, groovy animal themed bass-drums duo from Chapel Hill."
Thursday, September 8
Akron/Family [http://www.younggodrecords.com/product.asp?P_ID=37], The
Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers
[http://www.prayersandtears.com/], Kapow! Music
[http://kapowmusic.net]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Bu Hanan Records has, over the past couple of years, fashioned itself
into the premier local purveyor of wounded-sensitive-young-man
rock-with-dynamics and bedroom-beats-plus-guitars, and they do a damn
good job of it. Both Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers and
Kapow! Music capture quiet-intellectual-alienation as it swells to
momentary angst and then subsides again. The 21-year-old Serious Music
Fans of my acquaintance are all big fans.
Thursday, September 8
Scott Biram [http://www.scottbiram.com/], Patty Hurst Shifter
[http://www.pattyhurstshifter.com], Hearts and Daggers
Kings, Raleigh
This is the first night of a big three-night fest called Hatchetfest,
cosponsored by WKNC, the Raleigh Hatchet, and Kings. Patty Hurst
Shifter play vaguely southernish bar-rock with a dash of
singer-songwriterism on top. I'm unschooled on the other two.
Friday, September 9
Strange [http://www.thisisstrange.org], Circle, Urdog, Pyramid, The
Dynamite Brothers [http://www.dynamitebrothers.com/]
Kings, Raleigh
Night Two of Hatchetfest, sponsored by Kings, WKNC, and the Raleigh
Hatchet. Strange are a boomy, yes strange, Birthday Party-ish rockband
with nice stabs of keyboard & trumpet to temper the bombast. Pyramid
are a large band from the Charlotte area, IIRC, but I don't know much
more than that. Dynamite Brothers were back down to two-piece
(gtr/drums) status last time I saw them: stripped-down hopped-up
country-blues-shout and stomp.
Friday, September 9
Totimoshi [http://www.totimoshi.com/], In the Year of the Pig
[http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm], Caltrop
Local 506, Chapel Hill
In the Year of the Pig are a bass-drums duo from Chapel Hill; Caltrop
are a Continent (ex-El Sucio & ex-Ladderback) side-project. Very
sludge/Sabbathy.
Saturday, September 10
A Rooster for the Masses
[http://www.myspace.com/aroosterforthemasses], Fatal Flying
Guilloteens [http://www.fatalflyingguilloteens.com/], The Bleeding
Hearts [http://www.thebleedinghearts.net/home.html], Awesome New
Republic, Esquimaux
Kings, Raleigh
This is night three of Hatchetfest. I'm quite fond of the one Rooster
for the Masses song I've heard, but I haven't seen them, and for all I
know the song I heard is actually some long-lost track from that
early-80s UK scene where all the punk bands were getting heavy into
reggae.
Saturday, September 10
$2 Pistols, Tres Chicas, Chris Stamey [http://www.chrisstamey.com/],
Sally Spring [http://www.sallyspring.com/]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
This is a party for the 10th anniversary of No Depression Magazine,
which was started on the Austin->Seattle axis, but which moved one end
of that axis to Durham's Parkwood neighborhood a few years ago. Happy
Anniversary, Peter; I hope all four bands on the bill play kickass
covers of "Wichita Lineman" for you.
Saturday, September 10
Mowing Lawns [http://www.dyss.net/mlawns.html], Cantwell, Gomez,
Jordan [http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com], David Nahm
[http://audubonpark.blogspot.com]
Wetlands, Chapel Hill
I've only seen Mowing Lawns as an acoustic two-piece, which involved a
lot of intricate arpeggiated guitar music that put me in mind of Aimee
Argote's pre-Des_Ark band Rubeo (sans Aimee's vocals, duh). I'm told
they're similar-but-different as a full band.
David Nahm is the frontman of Audubon Park, who reclaimed their
rightful position as My Favorite Working NC Band the other night at
305 South. They were unstoppable. David alone is somewhat more
stoppable, just because there's less of him.
Cantwell Gomez and Jordan are an incredibly tight powerful machine of
fucked-up-spazzcore. Their new split 7" with The Nein is the single
most urgent/important bit of local vinyl this year.
Sunday, September 11
Caltrop
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham
Caltrop is a heavy/sludgy/Sabbathy side-project of the band Continent,
who are themselves the giant hybrid monster that arose from the ashes
of El Sucio and the Ladderback. 5:00pm 88.7 FM or
[http://www.wxdu.org] www.wxdu.org.
