HUNTER S THOMPSON WAKE/READING - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7 AT 7 PM

Rescheduled -- Hunter Stockton Thompson recently committed suicide at his home in Colorado. On Wednesday (3/7) we'll spend an informal evening at the store with his writings, please join us in remembering the founder of Gonzo Journalism and a great American. We have a short documentary we'll be screening around 7:30, "Fear & Loathing in Gonzovision" (BBC, 1978). We have copies of many of his books in stock, or bring your own favorite HST book to read from. His most recent title is Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness. "We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world -- a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts."

BOOK CLUB: REMEMBERING REET & SHINE BY MICHAEL SCHWALBE

Please join the Internationalist Book Club for a discussion of "Remembering Reet and Shine: Two Black Men, One Struggle" on Monday March 21 at 7:30pm at the bookstore. Author Michael Schwalbe will be present! He will present a slide show on the life of Reet and Shine. Copies of Remembering Reet and Shine are available at the store.

Matthew Mason and Anthony Atwater, two working-class African Americans who lived and died in the American South, led double lives. To family and the black community, they were local men, fathers, and companions. In the dominant white world, where they earned their wages, they were known by their nicknames, Dr. Reet and Shine. In this dual biography, Michael Schwalbe finds these monikers to be both endearing and degrading. Like other black men of their era, Mason and Atwater created personas. Mason became "Dr. Reet," a witty entertainer to his white employers. Atwater became "Shine," a streetwise stud who was skilled in love and violence. Each persona seemed like a solution, but bore unanticipated costs.
