Local musicians who're slated to appear include Chris Stamey, Kaia Wilson, Ivan Howard from the Rosebuds, Erie Choir, Street Green, Billy Sugarfix, Fan Modine, The Feeble Hex, Hotel Lights, Ben Davis & more

Martin Street Music Hall, Raleigh

Friday, February 25
"Jesus Lizard" & "Fugazi"
Kings, Raleigh

If you were at the 2004 Great Cover-Up at Kings, then you've already cancelled whatever other plans you had & you're going to be at this show. If you missed it, then you need to go ahead & do the same. The "Jesus Lizard" was truly awe-inspiring; I suppose now that the actual Cover-Up is long since over, I can mention that the band includes a trio of veterans of such bands as Analogue, Razzle & Cantwell Gomez & Jordan, plus local writer/celebrity/hunk Cy Rawls as "David Yow." (You may remember Cy from his turn as "Glenn Danzig" a couple of years ago).

The band is tight as fuck and so are Cy's pecs. And his ass-cheeks, actually, and yes, you'll likely have a chance to check that for yrself. Brrrrr.

I didn't see "Fugazi" because it just seemed like a hopelessly quixotic undertaking, but apparently they were successful enough at it to be asked back for this, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Saturday, February 26
Cool John Ferguson [http://www.musicmaker.org/artistroster/Cooljohn.htm], Macavine Hayes [http://www.musicmaker.org/artistroster/macavinehayes.htm], Captain Luke [http://www.musicmaker.org/artistroster/captluke.htm], Whistlin Britches [http://www.musicmaker.org/artistroster/whistlinbrtiches.html]
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

For the past 10 years the Music Maker Relief Foundation has been seeking out aging blues/roots musicians and assisting them with both cash/food grants as well as booking, recording & touring support. This show is a showcase of four of the artists on their roster, Durham's Cool John Ferguson, and Winston-Salem's Captain Luke, Macavine Hayes, and Haskel "Whistlin' Britches" Thompson. This is the Real Deal, and it's worth noting as well that the MMRF is largely the work of two people, Tim and Denise Duffy, who've devoted the last 10 years of their lives to improving the lives of aging & often near-destitute blues musicians.

Saturday, February 26
Chatham County Line, Tres Chicas
Lincoln Theater, Raleigh

Saturday, February 26
Legion of the Fallen, Unholy Crusades, The Stoles, Stolypins, Los Chupacabras
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Per the Nightlight website, "metal, metal, metalish street punkish, rock 'n' roll, and a rockin band that plays mostly rock covers. HIGH SCHOOL PUNK ROCK NIGHT."

Saturday, February 26
Bellafea [http://www.bellafea.com/], des_ark [http://www.des-ark.org], Work Clothes [http://www.bullfightparty.org]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a joint CD-release party for both des_ark (new full-length (well, by the standards of their live set, at least) on Bifocal Media) and Bellafea (new EP, which is about as long as the des_ark, on Pidgeon English).

The Work Clothes kids sent us a copy of *their* new CD the other day, and it's spooky & echoey and great. This apparently isn't a CD release party for it, however, but that shouldn't stop you from celebrating.

What does it mean that three of the most promising young rockbands in the Triangle are coed duos working with some variation on gtr/drums/vocals? I think it means that gas is still a buck-eighty-five a gallon & the smart kids today are all about traveling light.

Sunday, February 27
Killing Frost [http://www.thekillingfrost.com/], Warbomb! [http://www.myspace.com/warbomb]
Kings, Raleigh

This is the Sunday-afternoon matinee at Kings, which means we're talking ~5:00p.m., no fooling.

The Killing Frost are from Durham, and they feature a couple of kids from a great short-lived Greensboro band called The Dirty Version, plus one of the dudes from that guitar army called Feces for Warpaint, and des_ark drummer Tim Herzog on drums. Despite the comparable heaviosity of their rhythm section, the stuff I've heard sounds more like the Dirty Version, which is to say melodic indie-rock with off-kilter boy-girl vocals that at their best remind me of the better moments of Rainer Maria.

Warbomb! is a Winston-Salem band with one of the dudes from Kudzu Wish out front, and Malabaster/All Astronauts mainstays Kat Lamp and Kemp Stroble on bass & drums. I'm told that all their songs are about dirty sex, but I dunno how accurate that is.

Monday, February 28
Kapow! Music [http://kapowmusic.net], Clang Quartet
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Quick, what are some other onomatopoetic bands that Glenn can add to the bill at the last minute?

Clang Quartet is one Scotty Irving, who did many years as drummer for the great defunct Greensboro band Geezer Lake, and who has done many more years as Clang Quartet, the one-man avant-garde percussion-only tribute to the life & ideals of Jesus Christ.

Kapow! Music is primarily the work of John Ribo, who I believe is part of that ex-Austin Go Machine/BuHanan Records mafia. His album is introspective/autobiographical (or faux-autobiographical) bedroom-pop with some drum-machine dots&loops, some harmonica & accordion, and a fair amount of guitar.

Tuesday, March 1
Can Joann [http://www.canjoann.com/], The Strugglers [http://www.thestrugglers.org/]
The Library, Chapel Hill

The Library is on East Franklin (yes! live music on East Franklin . . . even scarier: ask me about Thursday-night indierock shows at the Treehouse, and no, I'm not making that up) and Tuesday night is Indie Rock night. This week it's the fragile/damaged country-folk-rock of the Strugglers, whose lineup shifts & changes but who are always the brainchild of Randy Bickford, who has become quite the gifted songwriter (and every batch of new songs is still yards better than the last). Also on the bill: Can Joann. I haven't seen them, but their cut on the "Bandwidth" compilation sounded like someone trying to cover the Aphex Twin with normal "rock" instruments.

Tuesday, March 1
Centro-Matic [http://www.centro-matic.com/], Beep Beep [http://www.ilovebeepbeep.com/], Baptist Generals [http://www.baptistgenerals.com/]
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Tuesday, March 1
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness [http://www.chosendarkness.com/], Spader, Cities [http://www.citiesmusic.com]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Two young indie-rock bands from the Triangle; one pleasantly-named ensemble from Austin.

Tuesday, March 1
Pegasus, Enemy Love [http://www.enemylove.com/], Brice Woodall [http://www.bwpmusic.com/]
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
