CHAPEL HILL - In an effort to stop motorists who may be driving under
the influence of alcohol or drugs, the Chapel Hill Police Department
will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location in
Chapel Hill on Friday, Dec. 10, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next
morning.

Assisting in the effort is the Orange County Sheriff's Department and
the North Carolina State Highway patrol. The North Carolina Department
of Health and Human Services' Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile will
be at the checkpoint. Also present will be representatives from the
Orange County Chapter of (MADD) Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Each year about 65,000 people are arrested for Driving While Impaired
(DWI) in North Carolina. Drivers who drink too much believe they stand
little chance of being detected. Increasing the perceived threat of
detection is one of the strongest deterrents to DWI.

Police continue to encourage people who are out drinking to take a cab
home or use a designated driver.
