Tracy + the Plastics have played up here in Boston a few times, and every time I say "Oh man, the Torch Marauder's been doing that since the nineties!"

if you don't live here, if you have to work till midnight, if your
grandma insists yr curfew is 10pm on skool nights: THEN READ THIS &
WEEP FOOL!

here's the breakdown: tracy + the plastics is wynne greenwood. wynne
plays three characters: tracy, the only living breathing human on
stage, plus nikki & cola, her california punk whoa tubular! cohorts
who are really just wynne dressed up, video taped & then projected on
stage. tracy is the leader of the band, the plastics are her misfits.
nikki & cola make the beats, tracy sings. they have lots of
conversations (re: a lady Torch Marauder).

tracy+the plastics are my soundtrack for self-improvement, my whiskey
when i'm sober, my soul when i am low. it is a complicated beautiful
mess, a marriage of dancy no wave minor key songs with a band that's
surprisingly present, despite their, y'know, VHS existence, spliced
together by tracy in all her confusing glory.

i have to wonder sometimes what it must be like, to be that person who
is able to create a whole band on their own. watching tracy's show
takes you to her fukd up candy land, at 4am in her room, dressing up
as her characters & talking to herself on film. creating skits that
are funny to her at the time, but that might not translate well at a
rock show. almost like she's forgotten why she thought it was funny,
but now here she is with it & it's embarrassing.

what you're left with is this woman, standing in front of a screen,
being hilarious & wacko & so unbelievably endearing. she's
interacting with her characters & a joke comes, and you're dying of
laughter on the inside, but gawking on the outside, wondering how it
is that someone has the guts to be that honest about how boring life
really is. or how lame we all really are, but how we come together &
make art because we have to.
