several people already have written books on the subject. one place you can
look is on the magazine rack at your local newstand. assuming they are still
available, Musician Magazine does a quartely (i think) Guide to Touring And
Promotions (www.musiciansguide.com/musicianmag/index.jsp) that has listings
for clubs, radio and local press in markets all over the country. and then
there is the Musician's Atlas (www.musiciansatlas.com) , which is kind of
pricey (29.95 - last time i checked), but has a lot of listings for
everything from clubs to where to buy guitar strings.

and of course, as Rossi mentioned there is Book Your Own Fucking Life from
the folks at Maximum Rock-N-Roll. and probably 10 or 15 more out there
somewhere.
you may already be familiar with all of these though, and i completely
understand the desire to talk to local musicians who have done it.
personally, i know very little about it, and i kind of like it that way.
having worked in the music industry for over 5 years now, and being around it
for 10 or 15 more, the last thing i would ever want to do is be a booking
agent. the few times i have dabbled, trying to help out bands on Merge, were
complete nightmares.

good luck.

Dad says, first you got to cut that hair.
Boys says, hey dad Jesus had long hair.
Dad says, That's right son, and Jesus walked everywhere."

Go to Hi Mom (www.himomfilmfest.org) tonight (Chapel Hill parking deck,
then Carrboro ArtsCenter) and Saturday afternoon/evening (all at the
Cradle). If you see any of the organizers and/or Jason Summers, BEG them
to schedule another screening of Jason & Kate Fix's insanely amazing &
inspiring Dead Moon documentary, "Unknown Passage." Because I *know* I
didn't see you at the screening last night, and it was so utterly
wonderful that you deserve another chance to see it.

I mean, I walked out of the ArtsCenter feeling close to 75% as great as
I felt last time I left an actual Dead Moon show, which is pretty
fucking good. Fred & Toody Cole are my heroes unto death & doubtless
beyond as well.

I'm going out of town this weekend, so you're otherwise on your own, but
here are some tips:

Six Organs of Admittance, Facedowninshit
Nightlight, Friday

I'm sure I've heard Six Organs of Admittance on college radio but I
can't keep that stuff straight, so figure it out yourself.
Facedowninshit have migrated back & forth between Greensboro & Portland;
I think they're from NC at the moment. They make uber-heavy
stoner-metal-rock, and the last time I saw them (at Nightlight) they
brought the full stacks and were the loudest thing I've ever heard in
that little Skylight Exchange building. And it was a great glorious
chest-massaging throb. Brilliant.

There's also a house show with Cold Sides that is their 12" release
party; here's info from Biggie:

"COLD SIDES and KARL VEISS at the frequeNC house, Friday Night, April 23.
celebrate the first frequeNC release, COLD SIDES' "perpetual hypeness
machine," this friday at charlie/jon/jay's house. "perpetual hypeness
machine" documents dave cantwell's final work with cold sides. frequeNC
records is a brand new label (www.frequenc.net) devoted to 12" vinyl
releases.

KARL VEISS is 2 brothers from NYC that make techno on the minimal/dub
tip, also they'll have some cool projections going.

get directions at www.frequenc.net and also know that DJ's NASTY BOOTS
and JUAN V will be playing all night. come to the first of a series of
great parties at the frequeNC house. thanks. "

Saturday night you're supposed to be at Hi Mom, remember? Don't let yr
mom down. www.himomfilmfest.org

Sunday night there's that weird triple-bill of Beans (underground
hip-hop) plus Ex Models (my personal fave of the current Brooklyn
post-post-punk fuck-shit-up noize-rock bands--when I saw them in
Greensboro last fall, their guitars made insanely painfully shrill
screeches for an hour and it was godhead. There was also a lot of
staggering around, and despite the pain, I could still feel little sharp
bits of melodic hooks spinning around in the blender. It was probably
the best thing I saw last fall, in fact) plus Tortoise, of all people.
Do they still sound like krautrock? At the Cradle. Like $14. Ouch.

I should have the website updated by Tuesday, along with another of
these emails, but if not, Dave Cantwell wants you to know:

"Tuesday, April 27th
at NightLight in Chapel Hill:

CANTWELL GOMEZ & JORDAN
ROBO SAPIEN
SINI ANDERSON

Thanks for listening,
--Dave C.

Glossary:
CantwellGomez&Jordan=Playin' it straight since '98 (roughly)

RoboSapien=Awesome punk/dance/pop/hip-hip trio from SF, CA. Think:
Peaches, LeTigre, FannyPack, stuff like that. All sexual inclinations
welcome!! (listen/learn at gorobosapien.com) Get on yr feet!!!

SiniAnderson=A founding member of SanFran's Sister Spit spoken word
performance troupe, now with a multi-media performance that is supposed
to be pretty amazing. There's a link to her on the RoboSapien website,
too. "
