Special SXSW-timeframe too-many-shows abbreviated edition:

Saturday, March 13
Tres Chicas, Brown Mountain Lights
[http://www.brownmountainlights.net/], Emily Waszak
[http://emilywaszak.com/]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a benefit for the [http://www.cisnc.com] Community Independent
School of North Chatham. Tres Chicas are Glory Fountain's Lynn Blakey
(one of my fave singers of all time, period), Caitlin Cary
(ex-Whiskeytown), and Hazeldine's Tonya Lamm.

Saturday, March 13
All Astronauts [http://www.allastronauts.com/], Kilowatthours
[http://www.kilowatthours.com/], Officer May [http://www.acefu.com/]
Project Space 211, Winston-Salem

Stolen from the PS211 [http://www.ps211.org] website:

All Astronauts return to the PS211 stage after their very successful
cd release party last month. They did a grueling 3 day NC tour with
the amazing des_ark and are back to to get all schizophrenic on you.
One can only describe their sound as the result of throwing punk and
alternative in a blender. They have a pretty intense live show and
still have a few copies left of their debut cd, navigation songs.
Kilowatthours play pretty, thoughtful, pop-infused post-rock. One can
definitely hear a little Mogwai influence in their songwriting, but
then again there is so much more. They write songs that get to the
point, and use patience, subtlety, and a deep surging power to make
that happen. If a name was never created for the effect rain and sun
coming together created, now is the time for it. It could be called
kWh. Boston's Officer May serve up some serious rock. Take equal parts
Bleach-era Nirvana, Drive Like Jehu, bolts of lightning, an ashtray
full of burned out cigarette butts plus a dash o' "crazy", and you
might have it. Their album "smoking in A Minor" was released on the
Ace Fu record label and blows it up. about Officer May-"Inventive and
intelligent. If there is any musical justice in the world this band is
already huge. 5 stars " Alternative Press

Now It's Overhead [http://www.nowitsoverhead.com/], Statistics
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

The one time I saw Now It's Overhead, they consisted of Athens studio
wunderkind/Bright Eyes multi-instrumentalist Andy Lemaster (late of
the weird quirky indie band Drip) along with the ladies of Azure Ray,
playing Andy's brilliant, heartfelt & at-times-yelpy songs. I was
utterly transfixed.

That has been a few years ago, and in the meantime Andy has continued
to work with Bright Eyes & record bands in Athens, and has managed to
release a 2nd Now It's Overhead record, which I haven't heard. I also
don't know if some/any members of Azure Ray are along for the ride
this time, either. But Andy's got such an exceptional ear that I'd
find it hard to imagine this show being anything other than great.

Saturday, March 13
Kaze [http://www.souldojo.com/], First Team
[http://www.firstteammusic.com/], Cesar Comanche
[http://cesarcomanche.8m.com/], Sev Statik
[http://www.sevstatik.com/]
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Sunday, March 14
Valient Thorr [http://www.valientthorr.com/], GoGoGo Airheart
[http://www.gogogoairheart.com/], Art Lord and the Self Portraits
Kings, Raleigh

This is the matinee at Kings, which means it begins at like 4:30 in
the afternoon. Seriously. Valient Thorr make ultra-high-energy
concept-rock/metal-whatever and they're from Venus, or so they claim.
They moved here from Greenville and they're definitely on the
to-be-watched list for 2004.

Sunday, March 14
Tiger Bear Wolf, Detachment Kit [http://www.detachmentkit.com/],
Candor
Ace's Basement, Greensboro

Sunday, March 14
Ted Leo + Pharmacists [http://www.gernblandsten.com/ted/intro], French
Toast, We Ragazzi
[http://www.selfstarterfoundation.com/weragazzi.html]
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Sunday, March 14
Inspector 22, Groundmonkeys
[http://www.angelfire.com/ultra/groundmonkeys/], Max Noi
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight wants you to know this:

special little sunday night showcase... just cuz we can. the inspector
is a 1man guitar dysstopia that we like to call 'our frend todd'. the
other folk are the transitory weirdo freedom band types that we like
to call, 'hot fucking shit'. one time i saw members of max noi
performing as a different band, and after their sweaty noise rap, they
all got naked in a pile on the floor. this was at mccusker & STRAdogs
house. j was making video, but was too shy to shoot the nudity. john's
decision was poor, yours - to come here, will be powerful.

Monday, March 15
Lubricated Goat [http://www.lubricatedgoat.net/], Battles
Kings, Raleigh

Via Kings website, some info on Battles from Alternative Press -- "We
may be taking some liberties with the term supergroup here, but we'll
deal, as we never thought we'd see post-rock guitar wiz Ian Williams
(ex-Don Caballero, Storm & Stress) and post-metal drum god John
Stanier (Tomahawk, Ex-Helmet) join forces. For Battles, the pair team
with guitarist Dave Konopka (Ex-Lynx) and avant-guitar prodigy Tyondai
Braxton for a finger tapping, locked groove, keyboard accented
extension of the sound Williams trademarked in his previous bands.
..."

Tuesday, March 16

Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Political Puppet Shows
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight sez:

The Terrible Tales of Timoney and A Wall is Just a Wall . $6 - This
puppet show tour is being organized to support the Timoney Three -
specifically Camilo Viveiros, the only person who is still facing
first degree felony charges stemming from the Republican National
Convention, 2000. The Providence Puppet Posse is traveling in a
bio-diesel car around the east coast and midwest with two puppet shows
and a message for everyone: We need to defend those who protest for
all of our freedoms! The Terrible Tales of Timoney and A Wall is Just
a Wall are two shows that were created to expose the unjust repression
of protest and the political history of prisons from past to present.
Keep the Timoney Three Free!

Wednesday, March 17
Razzle [http://www.chooglin.com], The Dynamite Brothers
[http://www.dynamitebrothers.com/], Utah! [http://www.utah-rock.com],
Lud [http://members.aol.com/~ludkmr/]
Kings, Raleigh

This is a benefit show for Mike Triplett, the Fin Fang Foom guitarist
and Go Studios manager who has recently been hospitalized with spinal
meningitis as well as a host of complications stemming from it. It
should speak volumes about the esteem Mike's held in by the local
music community that this benefit is being held at Kings, even though
Mike manages a rival club in Chapel Hill. Also speaks volumes about
the closeness of the local music community.

Plus, it should almost go without saying that the four bands on the
bill are four of the area's best & brightest.
