Kia ora Danyl, kia ora Wayne,

Both points about the new website are well-received.  My understanding is that the new website will go live shortly.  The launch date has been pushed back, due to some server problems at the Royal Society; I'll give a firm date when I know more.  We'll be using Wordpress, so that might address some of the open-access issues.  (Does it?  Do let me know).  Anyway, watch this space!

I'll send a longer message with an introduction and some suggestions for the year ahead when I'm in the office tomorrow morning.  I have a background in education--I was a full-time tutor in Media Studies at Vic a few years back, I taught some courses in English and Writing in the SUNY system while I was a grad student in Albany, New York, and I worked with primary and secondary school students while living in Vancouver--so I'll definitely be aiming to follow up some of the OER work Jane was doing with Wayne.  I'll also be a student in the OCL4Ed workshop, to help get myself up to speed on some of the issues there!
Wayne's points about using the site as a community tool mirror my own impressions.  Ideally, it would both host discussion for the CC community as it already exists, as well as draw in some folks who aren't already in the fold.  I'll be looking to do some writing for the site specifically to this end, though I'm not completely sure just yet what form this will take.

As I say, I'll expand on this introduction shortly.  I'll be meeting with the CC advisory board very soon, so that will also be another chance to give a more expansive sense of what CCANZ might look like in the year ahead.

I missed the boat with Culture Freedom Day, as it took place just three days after I started at CC, though I'll be excited to organize some events for similar occasions in the future.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Cheers,
Matt McGregor

Again -- welcome aboard Matt.

I echo the call for hosting the CC-NZ website using a free software engine. Its not appropriate for a free culture initiative to be using non-free software -- we must walk the the talk ;-).  From recollection good progress was made in moving towards an open solution -- so we should be able to move this agenda item forward and with community help and engagement, it shouldn't be a problem.

On a related note, with reference to advocacy for open licensing and capacity building, we're hosting another free online Open Content Licensing for Educators (OCL4Ed) workshop to coincide with the UNESCO World OER Congress in June.  We're aiming to break are previous record of 1067 participants. Would be great if the CC-NZ community could help spread the word through your networks.

Will post a separate note to the list about OCL4Ed 2012.06.

Cheers
Wayne

Matt, nau mai, haere mai ki te rōpu CC-NZ (I hope you are on the list
to receive this welcome ;) I don't envy you having to fill Jane's
shoes, she's been a tremendous champion for CC, OER and free culture
generally in Aotearoa, and no doubt she will continue to do great work
under the umbrella of DigitalNZ.

This email list was set up to help getting the CC license localisation
process underway, and has evolved into a community tool for
announcements, discussion and networking around CC, and sometimes
other free culture topics (OER, Open Access etc). Please feel free to
introduce yourself, and talk about what you plan to do as Project Lead
over the coming year. This will be a good chance for an open
discussion on the state of the project, and what we as the CC ANZ
community can do to help realise any good ideas that come up.

One thing I'd definitely like to see happen is the proposed upgrade of
the CreativeCommons.org.nz website, perhaps in time for a re-launch on
the next Culture Freedom Day. Many of us have been itching to see it
migrated to a free code platform, so its further development can be
more of an open source community process. I'm particularly keen to see
the forums made more user-friendly, as they are currently under-used,
and strewn with posts that looks like spam:

If funds are short, perhaps we could look for some web design students
who support free culture ideals and could donate some time?
Alternatively, we could look at a fundraising campaign on
PledgeMe.co.nz.
