Hi Danyl

It's work I was doing, and I doubt that any further work has been done during
this transition phase. That's just as well, because I think that the next
step is for the Board when appointed to do a thorough review of progress,
including taking submissions from anyone interested in what should be done
and how. One thing they'll need to consider is whether the position which had
been reached on the proposal for an indigenous licence should continue to
build on that work or should be approached in a different way. The coming
conference on indigenous IP which Jane circulated information about is an
immediate context where these matters should be explored, for example.

I accepted that there is an important protocol associated with being given
(not finding or taking) a Maori name. Maori scholars were consulted, a
critical point being that a Maori name should originate from its own language
and bring that history of meanings with it, rather than simply being a
transliteration of English words. I don't expect, for one moment, that this
is the only right way of approaching this matter, but I think it's consistent
with the larger goal you affirm of mutual recognition and use of both
languages. The next stage in the indigenous licence project was to be an
extensive consultation, of the kind you have in mind.

Brian

Kia ora koutou

Brian, thanks for this. Do you know who was responsible for following
up the naming issue with Te Taura Whiri, and where they are at with
this?

My assumptions is that these kinds of relationships and projects that
were being handled by the Council will be handled in future by the
proposed CC ANZ board/ steering group. This transition will be
smoother if all of the work in progress is documented, including
things have had drifted onto the backburner, so the board can follow
them up once it is in place.

With all due respect to organisations that have made the effort to
formalise a name in Te Reo Maori, this alone is a token effort. In my
opinion a commitment to moving beyond monocultural development
requires more of us. In this context, consulting widely with Tāngata
Whenua and their organisations, especially those who have experience
with community and project development frameworks, can only be
beneficial. Keeping that in mind I will follow up the contact Emily
has offered.

Ngā mihi nui
Danyl
