Title: Re: [Cc-nz] List feedback requested
Kia ora koutou

A couple of more general comments. The new website is running a month late. The Board at its 4 July meeting set 31 July as the date for it to be ready to go live.

The main point of the site is to build the CC aotearoa new zealand community of interest. The discussion/forum aspect is intended to complement case studies, news and events information, guidance for using the licences (two new FAQ sections), and to maintain links for the ANZ community with the global CC environment.

Our web administrators attended the CC au meeting, "Building an Australasian Commons", at the end of June. There will be a report about that on the new site.

A plan for workshops to promote CC was agreed at the 4 July meeting, and it will be implemented as resources allow over the next 6 months. These are the kinds of events which will benefit from Leigh's suggestion about the use of web conferencing facilities, as well as having a presence through the website.

Participation by and information from those interested in CC will be critical to the effective building of a CC community in NZ.

Considering the issue that some people express about volume of email..

I wonder if this list should simply announce discussions, and that those discussions go on somewhere that email doesn't flood those less interested in the topic. I'm aware of all the reasons why not to do this mind you.. I don't think this list has achieved the sense of community of practice needed to sustain the type of discussions that would make this list valuable...

Either that or we disregard the concerns of people not ofay with managing email and do more to build up the numbers of people who can manage - to a point where discussion does take place, but this might only end up excluding managers, policy makers and directors.

One thing we could do more of in terms of building up numbers and a community of practice is to hold online events from time to time. Otago Polytechnic has a web conferencing facility we'd be welcome to use, if anyone feels that organising guest speakers, panels, interviews, press conferences or just little meet ups for open discussion would be of benefit. I certainly think we should use such a facility when ever we hold face to face events so as to include online participation and more thorough documentation.

Hi

bit sloppy of late. One of our three admins vanished without a trace,

Well, I am still alive. *Checks with wife.* Yes, I definitely am. But for me it's no matter where I admin the list from, either way, it's hosted near where I lives. I wouldn't say I have disappeared from any responsibility for the list, as it's mostly been self-administering, seriously.

There is a proposal to incorporate the role of admin for this list into
the admin job for the creativecommons.org.nz <http://creativecommons.org.nz>  website. Hopefully this
will ensure that matters like people having trouble unsubscribing will
be taken care of more promptly. I will be meeting with Brian Opie next
week to discuss this in more detail. If anyone on the list has any
concerns about this changing of the e-guard, please post them to the
list for discussion.

Personally, I am happy to continue, but I'd rather some help. However, it seems that for some people it is far too confusing to follow the Mailman guidelines. But for most people it's been fine, so I see no reason to change the guard so to speak.

Which, if anyone wants to know my current situation and why it appears I disappeared, e-mail me off-list.

This cc-nz list was provided for us by the iCommons team and is hosted
on a server run by Ibiblio, a project to build a sort of 'public library
of Earth':
http://ibiblio.org/about.php

I run some other ibiblio lists and sites, so it's no problem for me to continue.

The original purpose was to provide a discussion forum for people
interested in the process of getting the CC licenses translated for NZ
law. Now that this goal has been achieved, the next logical step is to
promote the existence of CC to the public of Aotearoa, and encourage the
use of the licenses. The question is, how can this list best be used to
facilitate that work?

Personally I find the information about related topics such as the
visits by Lawrence Lessig and Richard Stallman to be very useful.
However, I'm used to dealing with large volumes of email from national
and global working groups communicating through email lists. For someone
who joins the list to find out why and how they might use CC licenses,
this volume of email may be off-putting.

My suggestion is that we perhaps ask about creating a cc users' list, for 'consumer'-grade creators of content (say, bloggers, Flickr users, etc) with discussion centred on stuff like evangelisation and how to use the licences instead of policy or revisions of the licences, blah blah etc.

On another note, I have been slightly disappointed there's not that much discussion on where one might use the licence, especially for companies, charities and government agencies that are simply used to slapping the copyright symbol on their work.

Again, I am happy to still admin the list (again, if anyone wants to know exactly why I am in the US, email me off-list). Requires the odd bit of dirty HTML or Mailman fiddling, but no harm in that.

Whatever suits everyone, really. Doesn't bother me.

*Goes back to fiddling with his .procmailrc.*
