Thanks for the response Alison, my comment was a little grumpy because
as a rule NZ cultural sites seem to take this kind of proprietary
attitude as a rule rather than the exception, and don't get me started
on Crown Copyright. What ever function you perceive for copyright,
restrictions on the outputs of tax payer funded State entities don't
seem to me to fit.

Perhaps its the size of the country that drives a need to recoup every
kind of investment, but in an era of a Digital Content Strategy, the
barrier, however small or essential seems at odds with that goal. As
for the 7 day life span and proprietary nature of some of RNZs State
funded outputs, the less said the better. I see even the NYT and
shortly no doubt, the WSJ, are realising the nett of restriction is
loss.

My perspective is I don't pay the dead, copyright will not incent an
iota of additional productivity from them and that I think is the
purpose of copyright, not to benefit heirs and assigns for decades
after the death of the creator. So while I appreciate your need to
comply with the letter of the law, more effort to specifically and
openly grant CC style rights would be appreciated. A big blanket
statement and requirement for permission dampens creative fire.

And I'm pretty sure at some stage there'll be a controversial use
found for some of the material you steward that may lead to a decision
against the supplicant.

As for the CSS copyright... c'mon, what is the deal there?
