Hi Brian,

Sorry to be a bit slow off the mark with this, but I feel I must congratulate HRN and specifically you for so ably picking up the reigns and making so much progress.

And hearty congrats on the CPF success. Quite apart from the money, it shows that others do value the concept and the work.

Keep up the good work.

Ian

Update on Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand, 30 July 2007

1. The CPF application
The latest and most exciting news first.

I have just been advised that the application for funding for Stage 2 of the
CC ANZ website has been successful. This funding will enable the evolution
of the website to significant levels of interactivity, comparable to the
Australian and UK CC sites.

The HRN Board will be meeting in the next month or so to discuss the
development plan for the site.

I would like to acknowledge the many contributors to this outcome,
including: members of the HRN Board and the Council Site Administrator,
Louise O¹Brien; the group which brought the 6 August 2006 meeting together
at the National Library Winston Roberts, Ian Thompson, and Paul Reynolds
particularly for their ongoing benign and watchful oversight; members of CWA
New Media, specifically Jill Wilson and Sarah Kinley; our designer, Sarah
Laing; those in the partner organisations who responded to urgency at
various points in the completion of the application, and offered full
support for the initiative; Danyl Strype Adam Hyde, and members of
Indymedia, for their commitment to knowledge as a public good.

2. The Creative Commons Website
You will know that the site is now on-line and that it is a ³flat² site,
that is, it provides basic information about CC and its work, and provides a
point of contact for those in NZ with interests in this development.

The reason for going ahead without the licences was the delay in the
completion of the draft licences, the need to demonstrate that the project
is working to a timetable, and the relation between the development of the
CC site and the timetable for finalisation of the National Digital Content
Strategy.

3. The current position on the licences
Our initial redrafting was based on version 2.5, but CC International has
now moved to version 3 of the licences, and it is this version which the ANZ
licences will have to represent.

Since early April I have been trying to confirm with the Legal Team of CC
England the timetable for the completion of their draft v.3 of the licences.
It had been agreed that it made good sense for this work to be done only
once, and that launching CC ANZ with the latest version of the licences was
preferable to a two-stage process. However, the CC England timetable has
fallen very much behind the intentions in effect when the conversation with
them started.

As a result, our team has finalised the draft of the first licence based on
the current version (by-nc-sa: Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike)), and
this has been sent to the Director of CCi for her consideration. It is
intended that the completion of the remaining drafts will occur as soon as
we have received her endorsement of this work.

4. Appointment of the CC Site Administrator
You will probably know that Alastair Pharo has agreed to undertake this
work. He is currently enrolled full-time at VUW in English Literature
Honours, and has considerable experience in IT. He has already made a
significant contribution to the development of the website.

5. The Launch of the Licences
The date for this event has still to be finalised. I hope to be able to
provide a firm date in the near future, but it depends on progress with the
licences.

6. Publicising CC ANZ
We are looking for opportunities to publicise the website before the launch
of the licences. If you have any suggestions about relevant events,  or
would like some information to circulate, would you please write to Alastair
Pharo <asppsa AT gmail.com >

7. Meeting with the CC Au team
I was in Brisbane for an eResearch conference a few weeks ago, and had a
very friendly and informative meeting with Prof Brian Fitzgerald and his
team. We are assured of ongoing collaboration with CC Au.
