Hi all,

here's a quick rundown of notable things discussed/announced yesterday:

- - - - - - - - - - - 8< - - - - - - - - - -

Fundraising Successes
  • Through a lot of work of several staff members CC scored new Arcadia funding for building legal tools for OA in academia
  • New CC Director of Development was hired, starting July 7, announcement to come soon

GS 2015
  • Registration is now open
  • See Jessica's email for that and further details as they become available
  • There will be slots (about 1/3 of the summit's time) for special streams such as education, platforms, policy and so on
  • Deadline for the initial Call for Papers is around 6th July
  • Regional Meetings will definitely happen at the summit as well, probably on day 4

Deeds donation pop-up issue
  • the hick-up had not only to do with being unaware of the Transifex side-effects, but also with faulty _javascript_ code which should have prevented the double message but didn't
  • background is - as Ryan explained in his email to all - that CC must explore all possible donation opportunities
  • two areas of focus for individual donations are email and website
  • the general outreach mailing list was tripled in size over the past year (to around 35.000) but this will not grow fast enough to meet our funding goals
  • CC has hired an external company (Trilogy) to devise ways to use the CC website as leverage for small donations and refine our email outreach
  • as this is professional service that costs more the longer it is needed, the investigation/testing/optimizing must be done very efficiently and with as few delays as reasonable, hence the high pace of trying things out etc.
  • in the upcoming iterations of testing/optimization the affiliate network will be consulted more (still there might come some situations where nobody anticipated the need for further affiliate consulation; in those cases comments and interventions by affiliates are welcome as well)
  • future actions in this field could (and sometimes should) be tailored to different regions of the world, in which case the regional opinions will play an even more prominent role
  • regarding the next State of the Commons Report, which plays a role also for donations campaigning, the affiliate networke will be prompted at an early stage for contributions and comments
  • btw: we subscribed Ryan also to the cc-europe list now, so that he can take part in our debates more directly

Short update on these policy things happening in Europe right now:
  • John on behalf of CC attended an MEP's event on Freedom of Panorama, the harmonization of which is pushed by Wikimedia in Brussels
  • The CMO Directive's implementation ist on our plate, further steps to coordinate with interested affiliates intended
  • Some players (notably from Austria) are pushing for EU-wide adoption of a new ancillary right for publishers similar to the one in Germany
  • TTIP: There’s word that IP will be completely deleted from the text, which would probably be good news from the US perspective and mixed news from the European point of view.
