Hi Gwen & John,

Thanks for the opportunity to comment at this stage :)

I like the three-day approach, where we can both show off what we do and have some good internal discussions.

Some questions/remarks:

  • For the public facing day 1: showing off is a good thing, but I am not quite sure who the audience is. If it is mostly the local population of seoul and ourselves, I think it is also a good idea to collaborate with local initiatives that follow our sharing principles. Otherwise we might seem a bit too self involved (like CC is the only way you can use the common principles/sharing ideas). I’m thinking of the local sharing economy people for example.
  • Day 2 (working/sharing): I’m reading this as a practical working day now that we have everybody in the same building. I’m slightly worried that it will end up being making a lot of cool plans for the future if the work is not prepared properly (time constraints). Perhaps something to keep in mind when people start submitting proposals. Better to have less things going on and do them well, I would say.
  • Day 3 (future): very interesting. Would welcome a discussion on the affiliate network structure, and would also put CC’s involvement in copyright reform on the agenda.

Also, something that  might be nice for the first day, some form of live collaboration between artists from the different continents - something that can be shown (a short movie, musical piece) at the party at night.

Cheers,

Lisette

A month ago Ryan Merkley announced the 2015 Creative Commons Global Summit will take place in Seoul, South Korea, October 15-17, 2015. Huge congratulations to CC Korea for their winning bid! It's exciting to be convening the global Creative Commons family and as many of our sister open organizations as possible.

I've agreed to help with program planning and am sending this e-mail is to update you on planning progress and invite you to participate in brainstorming and working groups around the Global Summit theme, structure, and program activities.

We will be launching a Call for Participation to the general public soon that people can use to submit ideas for specific sessions or events. But in the meantime, we're hoping for feedback from you, our affiliate community, on the general ideas being proposed so far. We are also looking for volunteers to join a Programming Committee which will help us with the details, including defining tracks, program activity selection, working with keynotes, developing a schedule, etc.

A draft description of the proposed program themes, structure, and example activities so far is provided below.

Requests:
  1. If you have feedback or suggestions on themes, structure and example activities please add them to this Google doc.
  2. If you want to join the Programming Committee add your name and email to this Google doc.

Overall Proposed Theme: Sharing City, Sharing World

Day 1 - Proposed Sub-theme - Celebration of Sharing
  • Public facing event celebrating and highlighting the value of CC
  • Example Activities:
    • Showcase CC examples from all sectors (GLAM, education, artists, writers, photographers, filmmakers, scientists, ...)
    • Showcase CC examples from all regions of the world - something from as many affiliates as possible
    • Ignite talks by CC volunteers from around the world sharing their personal stories, inspiring ideas, and experiences
    • CC music collaboration, CC cookoff (of CC recipes), fun festival, film festival, anti-surveillance fashion show ... Things that actively engage the public
    • Many more examples and ideas have been shared on this Google doc
  • Keynotes - to be determined
  • Evening: CC Party

Day 2 - Proposed Sub-theme - The Work of Sharing
  • Working group sessions that collaborate on solving the issues of today
  • Examples Activities:
    • Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Creative Commons
    • CC tech and mobile hackathon - the List, CC Chooser, CC Search, CC use tracking, ...

    • Many more examples and ideas have been shared on this Google doc
  • Keynotes and/or panels - to be determined
  • Evening: CC Salon

Day 3 - Proposed Sub-theme - The Future of Sharing
  • Focus on planning and strategy for next two years
  • Example Activities:
    • Panel or debate on big picture of CC -- how can it be more relevant? How to work with other sister organizations?
    • What is the role/future of the affiliate network - examine how the current network works; its structure; brainstorming workshop
    • Q&A session with Ryan and board of directors
    • Are the CC licences still needed”? chance to really examine/challenge CC’s role in the new decade - how CC is adapting to new users/industry/tech trends, etc.
    • Shaping CC's strategic plan
    • Many more examples and ideas have been shared on this Google doc
  • Keynotes and/or panels
  • Evening: CC Dinner

In addition to the summit program, regional meetings, mini-conferences, and side events can all be organized by any of you to take place in days pre or post summit.

Looking forward to your input and participation in what is shaping up to be an awesome event.
