Dear all,

There's exciting news from a team in Lithuania who would like to begin a CC jurisdiction project there. In line with CC Europe's mission to identify and expand CC communities across the continent and your experience in building strong teams in your own countries, we would like to share this message with you and invite your thoughts about their proposal.

We have been in touch for some time with individuals in Lithuania interested in translating CC materials into their language. Now, following the porting guidelines, a team has been assembled to also take on the legal and public work, plus an institution that can host them. It sounds really promising, and we're looking forward to working with them. Before we sign off, we wanted to invite your review and also ask if any of you would like to get more involved in building this project with us. It would not have to be a big commitment, but it could be useful for this new European team to have an "older brother/sister" to help get started and share experience. No matter what, we will keep everyone posted via the CCi list about the Lithuanian project, but please also feel free to link up with us if you'd like to help mentor or share more thoughts about this local process.

Many thanks and hope you're all well!

// Michelle

Dear representatives of Creative Commons,

I am approaching You on behalf of our team that is aiming to port CC licenses in the Republic of Lithuania. You will find the list of other participants listed further.

First of all, let us express admiration and appreciation for the processes that You have triggered and the work that You are doing. We are a team of enthusiasts that value the CC initiative and would like to contribute to the idea. We have therefore gathered a team of specialists and are applying hereby to launch the process of adapting CC licenses for usage in Lithuanian jurisdiction.

Please find the details on our team below.

Legal Project Lead

Prof. dr. (HP) Vytautas Mizaras is the head of the Private (Civil) Law Department of the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University. Professor Mizaras has been teaching intellectual property related aspects for many years, the subjects of his doctoral thesis and habilitation procedures were both based on legal protection of authors’ rights. V. Mizaras has carried out numerous researches in the field of civil law, has been constantly publishing his written works and has been working as an advisor of the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania, responsible for coordination of preparation of the new (presently applicable) Civil Code and Code of Civil Procedure, providing legal findings on the application of legal acts (please find the Lithuanian version of CV (Europass) online at: http://www.tf.vu.lt/images/stories/CTCPK/Mizaras_CV_LT_2009.pdf, contact e-mail address: Vytautas.Mizaras AT tf.vu.lt).

Professor will be accompanied by the team of junior lawyers, who are expected to carry out most of the organizational and technical work, and prepare draft reviews of legal applicability of the licenses, as regards their interaction with the existent authors’ rights regime in Lithuania:

Paulius Jurčys, LL.M., LL.D. Candidate, Kyushu University, Japan (pjurcys AT googlemail.com, CV at http://www.law.kyushu-u.ac.jp/miryoku/students.html#paul);

Rėda Pilipaitė from Law Firm Budvytis, Civilis & Partners, lecturer at Faculty of Law of Mykolas Romeris University (r.pilipaite AT gmail.com); and

Jurga Gradauskaitė, LL.M (j.gradauskaite@my.westminster.ac.uk).

The group consist of former professor’s students who are presently practising lawyers and/or are proceeding with their academic carriers. In case of necessity, also other assisting lawyers will be involved.

Public Project Lead

Carrying out the task of getting as much publicity as possible the group will be cooperating with the public establishment “LT identity” (http://www.lt-identity.com/content.php?p=design&mid=1). The enterprise has been established by two Lithuanian artists seeking to find new ways to form Lithuanians’ attitude to their nationality through its cultural aspect. “LT identity” has experience in fundraising, organising cultural events, triggering intersectional dialogues, public discussions that involve as a rule artists and representatives of public institutions. We are in particular seeking to use their experience in organising the event “Migrating birds”. The yearly event is based on gathering of a group of Lithuanian artists that have experience living and creating abroad and organising their creative workshops and discussion on a certain subject that is being changed every year. With luck, this year it could be Creative Commons, and/or legal protection of authorship in the Internet era.

Representative:  Jolanta Rimkutė (jolantarimkute AT gmail.com).

Affiliate Institution

The affiliate institution involved in the project will be the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University (http://www.vu.lt/en/). The university is the oldest in the country and the largest higher education institution. The Faculty of Law is also the oldest law school in the country. The law specialists of the faculty have contributed largely to the creation of the present modern civil law regulation system after the collapse of Soviet Regime, participated in drafting the present Civil Code, and therefore also took part in founding the present system of protection of authors’ rights. The cooperation will mostly be carried out by the Private (Civil) Law Department of the Faculty of Law. As the department is not a separate legal person, please let us know if the department’s representatives can sign the Memorandum of Understanding, or does it need to be officially signed by the governing bodies of the Faculty of Law itself.

Representative: Prof. dr. (HP) Vytautas Mizaras (please see e-mail above).

Also, please let us know if any additional details are required or in case you have any questions at all. Unfortunately, most of the relevant information online is available only in Lithuanian, but in case of Your request we will be happy to provide translations.

By the agreement of our team members I would like to be the initial contact person concerning the coordination of the project, however, please feel free to contact the other members in case of necessity / request.

We will be looking forward to Your reply and the launch of the process.

Best wishes,

Jurga Gradauskaite
