Does this floppy disk work on some other computer? They go bad with age.
Try a freshly formatted floppy disk for the install.

Do you know the hard drive is still good?
Can you easily remove it and try booting without it?

What model computer? I have run BL1 on a 386 with 3MB RAM, slowly.

Today I am trying to put BL3 loop on a 1997 133MHz HP Omnibook upgraded to 64MB RAM and 3GB hard drive. No USB, no CD boot. Floppy boot works. I plan to copy files over the network via PCMCIA network card.

Another option is Puppy Linux if you can find a way to get it on there.
Can you boot from CD?

When I try to boot floppy Disk1, it only goes so far, the everything freezes. ??This is the last line of text that appears while booting Disk1:

ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14

A blinking cursor appears beneath this line, but no input from the keyboard registers.

I am really hopeful that Basic Linux can be made to work, as it is my old pc's last chance at being useful!

Thanks!
