The SVGA server works perfectly (default 640x480) in this computer.
DOwnload and 'pkg' (install) SW4.0 xsvga.tgz and no-xvesa.tgz (Steven's package from the BL site which modifies startx and adds cursor.pcf.gz and rgb.txt and clR6x13.pcf.gz and changes fonts.dir).

Surprisingly, installing no-xvesa.tgz also fixed Xfbdev.
The new clR font was to fonts.dir added BEFORE 9x15. Maybe that helped since it is now probably the default font.

To boot to xfbdev X with jwm, I edited the startx produced by no-xvesa.tgz, changing it from plain

xinit

to

xinit -- /usr/X11/bin/Xfbdev

You still need the glibc 2.1 version of Xfbdev (and thus also glibc 2.1.3 from SW11).

I ran Xsetup to choose PS/2 and mouse now works too.
The ##'d parts of startx are not used by Xfbdev, just Xvesa. How do those lines work?

I also boot with the framebuffer kernel (bzimlznv) because it produces nicer-looking text on this computer, and more lines and columns.

Xfbdev uses 2.4% of RAM, and the SVGA server 4.8%. 48MB total RAM.
If you have 16MB Xfbdev is a major help.
