I read that I should add /usr/local/lib to the
path in /etc/ld.so.conf but that did not help.

Did you execute ldconfig afterwards?

Yes, that is the first thing I checked.

I just tested again: ran ldconfig, and moved libvga.so.* (cp -a) from /usr/lib/ to /usr/local/lib, and zgv could no longer find libvga.so.1 until I moved them back to /usr/lib.

I have had this problem for years. palm-db-tools specifically said to make sure /usr/local/lib was in ld.so.conf if you were doing a standard make install. I had already put it there.

Some programs can find their libraries in /usr/local/lib.
libsqlite3 works there, and libpng12.

Cheers,
Steven
