"bad blocks" is bad news. It usually
indicates bad hardware. Are you sure
the HD is OK? If your HD has a bad section, it may be possible
to use fdisk to adjust your partition start/end to avoid the bad section.

Ok, so it seems really likely that the HD is in bad shape (it is 12 years old), but how would I get to know which blocks were bad? (Besides trial and error).
