Ubuntu 5.10 live CD was flummoxed by the drive, which it decided was scsi.

All recent distros I've had experience with read SATA drives as scsi. The device file for it should be something like /dev/sda1.

don't have broadband. It took me days to figure out how to mount a hard
disk with Ubuntu (sudo mount /dev/hdc /mnt - there is no root password so
you cannot shell to root).

Try sudo su to get a root shell.

http://www.ntfs.com has a free trial version of a bootable CD (or USB
stick) that includes the free DOS ntfs reader (only 4MB zip file).

Do these recognize SATA drives?

For ntfs reading and general Windows rescue functions you'll want to look at Trinity Rescue CD. Boots to terminal and includes all the latest Linux tools for dealing with Windows. Not a really large download, but not small either (100-200 MB, if memory serves)
