Message from Sindi:

Individual sound patch files for use with timidity can be downloaded from
http://freepats.opensrc.org/freepats/Tone_000/
or you can download their set of patches (25MB):
http://freepats.opensrc.org/freepats-20060219.tar.bz (see the freepats directory for the .cfg file)

Most of these are the same size as the GUS patches that Ron recommended, but there are larger patches for:
tuba 1.4M instead of 150K
trombone 174K instead of 25K
flute 650K instead of 12K

You can probably replace any individual existing .pat file without changing the .cfg file by renaming it to the name of the old file.

My dyslexic partner reads books on tape, which will soon be available instead as books on CD, in DAISY format. I found a CLI linux reader idair (Iduna Daisy Reader), which would not compile for me with glibc 2.2.5 but is available precompiled for 2.3.1. It is based on OSS and will play 45 hours on one CD in digital format. Very compressed MP3s?

If I upgraded to glibc 2.3.1 solibs from SW90, how would I compile (cross-compile?) for 2.2.5 (for which I have the full glibc package, which I prefer not to download for 2.3.1)? I would use the SW9.1 glibc since I have it, but then other BL users could not use what I compiled since it needs kernel 2.4 or later.

Another option would be to set up BL3.50 with 2.3.1 and commonly used programs in 200MB, which would let it boot faster, and keep BL2 with 2.2.5 in 1GB and use that for compiling and less common activities such as scanning and recording CDs, with a third large partition for copying CDs to and storing photos.

Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic requires purchase of a software key. Perhaps linux won't need it.

The free magazines for the blind will be distributed on USB flash drives, disposable. They are currently on disposable cassettes.
