Steven, did you ever take the time to check out whether BL3.40 works with the S3 server in Opera? The SW71 S3 server worked properly for me in BL2, but the SW40 S3 server did not, Opera displayed black on black. You said to try adjusting color depth but I had 15-bit color already. The same XF86Config file worked in BL2 but not in BL3.
I had the same problems with the S3 and the SVGA servers with my Trio cards (and with the SVGA server with my Trident card) - Opera displays a black background instead of a grey background, behind black text.

I'm not sure that the SVGA Xserver is right for that card.
I would use the S3 Xserver.
The Trio32 with S3 server had the exact same problem, as did the Trident with SVGA server - black on black.
I tried a Trident PCI card with X_SVGA and it appeared to
work until I loaded Opera. The opening window and the F2 window
and the top menu are all black instead of grey background, with
black text.
What color-depth are you using?
15-bit.
Two more Trident cards and one Trio32 card have the same problem.
In addition to color-depth, there are several other
settings in XF86Config that might be important. Every
time you change VDU and/or video card, changes may be
necessary in XF86Config. Getting the perfect setting
for an Xserver is notoriously difficult.
Please let me know if you have something working. I want to use Rosegarden on a computer where Xvesa won't work unless I bypass DOS startup files, if possible in BL3 to prove BL3 X will really work with Opera and without Xvesa. (I can use BL2 instead if necessary, with an S3 server which does work, or switch to a slightly slower computer where Xvesa works with himem.sys).
The first Trident card works with Xvesa on this computer
Using Xvesa is much simpler than trying to configure an Xserver.
Yes but I don't want to have to bypass startup files. I am also using DOS midi players on that computer.
Avoid X_SVGA on older cards if possible,
I don't think you can draw that conclusion. I've had
no problem with X_SVGA on older cards (Cirrus, Trident).
Have you tried using them with Opera? That is the only place I noticed a problem.
Yes, configuration can be difficult, but X_SVGA does
work on old hardware.
Please suggest how to configure properly. My video cards have 2MB RAM so 24-bit at 800x600 should work. But 15-bit worked fine in BL2 with S3 server.
Sindi
Cheers,
Steven
