We have a 100MHz (24MB RAM) and a 266MHz (32MB RAM) Toshiba laptop computer, both came with bad hard drives. BL3.40.

I made swap files of 24MB and 32MB.

Newer Toshiba:

Using Steven's 2.2.16 and 2.2.26 (512K) kernels, and David's and my 2.4.31 USB mass storage and scsi kernels I get the following values from 'free'

Newer Toshiba with one USB port:

Total Used Free Shared Buffers
2.2.16 30,948 30,120 828 464 25,928
2.2.26 - 30,368 - - 26,152 (- means did not notice)
2.4.31 30,712 30,080 632 0 96 Mine with scsi as modules
2.4.31 30,484 29,784 700 0 96 David's (scsi built in)

Older Toshiba with no USB port:

2.4.31 22,380 12,932 9448 0 708 Mine with scsi as modules

Why is 17MB more memory being used on the newer USB Toshiba with all kernels than on the older Toshiba, and why does 2.4.31-USB not use it for buffers like the older kernels? I don't have a non-USB 2.4.31 kernel to test (no need for it). Is the kernel buggy?

We will use a 2.4.31 kernel on the laptop only to read a USB device, which can be done in DOS for the memory stick and the CF card (we also have a PCMCIA adaptor) and a camera with another type of memory and USB direct cable, but not the SM card reader, which does work in linux 2.4.31.

Neither DOS nor linux (either kernel) could even see a Kingston 256MB memory stick which someone told me was recognized (by Windows or maybe our DOS USB setup?) as having a CD-ROM type partition or two partitions. I had offered to reformat it. It was given out at a convention with info on it. Someone had two of them and may not have actually checked this one.
Maybe I need to recompile my kernel to recognize Kingston USB stick. I will try a Slackware USB kernel with it.
