The first question is what are you intending to do?

If you just want to get a "full" version of Linux installed, I have
seen distributions which support installation from PCMCIA CD-ROM...
just build a boot floppy disk, and away you go...

The next question is: What do you mean by 'building Linux from
scratch'? Just compiling a kernel (which is probably in the truest
sense of the word 'Linux'), or building a whole distribution?
