DSL seems to already set up sound. Maybe it has a movie player?
If it does, it is likely too simple to handle anything. LNX-BBC
(another business-card-CD-sized distribution) does not have a movie
player, only sox.
If we can get the computer to boot again we will try Ubuntu once - but that takes so long to load I am better off with BL2, lots of insmods, and parport zip BL3.

Can you make a 256MB RAMdisk for use with BL2,
Probably. I don't know what the upper limit for ramdisk size in
Linux is.
with a slightly modified kernel (this one does 4MB RAMdisks)
like DSL does?
DSL does not use ramdisks. It uses ramfs (AKA shmfs/tmpfs) which
the BL kernels do not have. ramfs allows you to mount a virtual
filesystem. When you write to this filesystem, Linux takes memory
and uses it for storage. The ramdisk_size parameter allows you
to adjust size of ramdisks on bootup of Linux. Or, have a look at
rdev, which allows you to adjust default ramdisk size of a kernel
image.
Maybe next year, this is too much over my head.
