2.2.16 can't even handle 802.11b wireless cards IIRC.

So the NET_RADIO module would be for older cards than that?

Yeah, there are other network cards that work over a radio, like
HAM packet radio and the older proprietary wireless cards. 802.11b
hadn't even been drafted when 2.2.16 was released.

Do I try bare.i from SW81 instead, or is there a specific wireless ethernet SW81 kernel? (I should eventually compile my own, of course).

I upgraded several X2 hardware modems but never a winmodem.

Upgrade here meaning installing a new driver?

I downloaded files from the web and had to run them in Windows 98, except for one that worked in DOS. Pretty dumb to require Windows to upgrade a DOS-compatible modem. I don't know exactly how the upgrade worked, it ran itself with python. USRobotics has lots of them at the site, specific to each modem. Afterwards the right ATI command (7?) included both x2 and v90, and I added something in pppsetup to tell it not to use x2 (s15=128 or s32=34, the other one tells it not to use some compression algorithm, I think).
