A live version of ubuntu? That might be worth trying. Yes, Linux has been slow to handle USB issues. There is available now Windows versions of the Open Office programs. I have a CD-ROM with the different versions for all the platforms. If you don't want to pony-up for MS Office, Open Office is a very good substitute...
