Oh yeah, I know there's a beep thingy for BL3, but I'm running bl2 right now. (More like a very difficult to operate one because half of my bash shell has been corrupted, and I can't use the ls command. I'm looking at a new computer quite soon.)
Anyway, I'll try the egcs pkg.

In my notes I wrote down that for BL2 you need to get from SW71 /d1:
binutils, egcs, gmake, and linuxinc in order to compile. Sometimes you will need something else missing from BL2 when compiling, which you need to figure out from the error messages.
Can't you get a cheap or free used small hard drive somewhere? If you compile with Bl2 you will probably want at least 500MB (I filled up that much after compiling a few things and adding X and Opera).
