- Subject: [BL] static lynx 2.8.5 needs glibc?
- Date: Mon, 8 Nov 2004 23:50:03 +0000 (UTC)
The lynx 2.8.5 that I compiled statically (including the SW71 libc) and
which will not work online but works offline in BL1 has the same problem
in BL3. I installed to HD and tried to access the BL3 site and got
'Unable to connect to remote host'. Since this is what you get when you
have lost your connection (I checked on the other computer offline) I
then tried links and it immediately accessed the BL3 site.
Then I did pkg on the SW81 glibc 2.2.5 solibs package (having mounted BL2
so I could access the tgz file there) and again tried that lynx and this
time it worked perfectly.
To confirm this, I then copied lynx and lynx.cfg to the loop version of
Bl3 and again 'Unable to connect to remote host' (and links and telnet do
work).
(Lynx will work better if you also copy over cert.pem and will let you
change coloring and underlines with lynx.lss but the above two files are
the basic ones).
There must be something in that solibs package (SW71 or SW81 work) which
lynx needs to access websites that is not a 'dependency' which gets listed
by ldd or gets compiled into the statically compiled package (which also
inludes openssl and ncurses and zlib). Any ideas what it might be?
I had been expecting it not to work until I added the SW71 pppd but that
was not needed. And the later pppd did not help in BL1 (from SW4.0).
I have discovered that my fastest computer with 256MB RAM was running
linux with 64MB RAM until I added to the boot.bat line mem=256M.
This has happened to other people too. Might it be helpful to include in
the instructions a suggestion to type 'free' and if the memory is too low,
add mem=?M (? = actual memory in the computer).
Is this a problem with loadlin (keeping the DOS 64MB, which is the DOS
limit) or does it also happen with lilo?
