I asked 'Can you unload himem.sys'. Answer 'While running? I don't think so'. Reboot required. We could also I think put lilo on a floppy disk and boot that way into linux.

Just got another 486 laptop working, this one with good floppy drive, works with DR-DOS, bad keyboard but we can plug in an external one. Low-power 12V that might be used to control fans via data acquisition board. I found a website on parallel port data acquisition with linux. Much more fun that with Windows.

I also read a bit on Minix which has three versions: i386 that needs 20MB and 3MB (better 4MB) RAM, i86 (for 16-bit) which should get 2MB RAM, and XT (360K floppy, 640K RAM). Nongraphical, can be used for compiling, has a C library, about 4MB download of the larger versions, kermit, TCP/IP. I don't know how many current source codes would compile on there but it would be fun to play with. BL is probably much more functional and not just an educational tool. Ran into this site while trying to find out about the 486 because someone put minix on it and was using it as an http server. The laptop came with 4MB but ours got upgraded to 8MB RAM so would be fine for BL3 with Xvesa except it is only 4-bit greyscale so no links2 (unless I can compile it) or abiword. Minix did not mention a dialer or a browser but it does TCP/IP. Sounds too challenging right now.

Our CD-R drive appears not to be burning - would not even copy a data CD with a freeware Windows program. Any idea how to test what is wrong with it? 0 files, completely shiny. Worked the first three times. We tried two CDs, rightside up. The program (Windows Burn4Free) tells us it has 0.00 free 0.00 used 0.00 total but says the sameabout an AOL CD. Another blank disk comes out as ?? ?? ??. Odd.

If I am going to need to use a menu to choose between FreeDOS with and
without himem.sys, and then use loadlin, I would need to reboot FreeDOS to
switch from using DOS programs to FreeDOS without himem sys in order to
use linux with Xvesa. It might be simpler in that case to use SBM/lilo if
I expect to do a lot with Xvesa. Can I install BL's and FreeDOS with a
config.sys menu and then add SBM/lilo later if I end up wanting to use
Xvesa often?

I don't know enough about DOS to know how to do this, or if it's even
possible, but could one create a batch file that would unload memory mgmt
stuff, then invoke loadlin? Does that absolutely require a reboot?
