Try xclock full screen for a low-resource screen saver (dark background,
muted foreground). It's manual, meaning when you want the screensaver,
you maximize xclock. I suppose it could be made to automatically maximize
after some period of inactivity--maybe using cron?--but that's beyond my
capabilities.
