I had much the same problem myself, when first playing with BasicLinux.

The trouble was, indeed, the mouse configuration. I've got an IBM
Thinkpad, and the generic PS/2 driver worked, but it was initially
defaulted to a serial mouse. I believe that I had to turn off the
third-button emulation, as well...
