You rarely see vi itself in linux these days.

You probably want one of the enhanced clones:

elvis - slakware/a2/elvis.tgz
vim - slakware/ap1/vim.tgz

Both these create executables which work like vi, but with extras (more undo
levels, support for compiling, etc, etc).

Vim is bigger, but also better. Take what you want.


fwiw, all you actually need from elvis is the executable, if you are really
short of space.
