I haven't timed it, but I wouldn't be surprised if BL3 were
faster (even though it first creates a ramdisk, boots initfs
and searches for fs.img before booting the root filesystem).

Try it with the pppd in Slackware 4.0.

Yes, it is accessing the entire DOS partition.

The easiest way is to do the find on just the directories that
interest you. For example:
-------------------------
find /usr -name whatever
find /bin -name whatever
find /sbin -name whatever
-------------------------
It would be pretty simple to put that all in a script.
