FTP-funcionality is built in for MC.

It never came to my mind to use links for ftp. I'll try and if it works on my
system, I'll take that for a solution.

I never use Midnight Commander, so I don't know how
it downloads files. Did you have to configure it
for downloading? Or was it built-in?

Personally, I would use links to download files.
Or maybe ftp (BL1) or wget (BL2).
