I assume you did the floppies because you are running
Windows NT/2000/XP ?

OK, it sounds like the ramdisk version is working.

Hold on. The last step of the installation routine is doing
the boot.bat. Did you do all the other steps first?

/dev/hda1 is probably your DOS drive (C:)
You need to install BasicLinux onto its own Linux partition.
It does not run from the DOS partition. Did you read the
HD installation instructions?

Is that system booting in DOS or Windows? boot.bat only
works from real DOS (or Windows 9x in DOS mode).

What exactly did you do?

That happens when the kernel cannot find the root filesystem.
It appears you are pointing the kernel at /dev/hda1 rather
than at the Linux partition where the BasicLinux filesystem
is installed.

Which of those partitions is the Linux partition?

And where is that exactly?

The instructions you should be using are inside BasicLinux. See
the opening screen when you first log on.

I suggest you forget about the floppies (unless you are running
Windows NT/2000/XP) and unzip the original BasicLinux file into
a subdirectory of your C: drive. Execute boot.bat from there,
log on as root, and then enter the following:
-------
install
-------
