"at that point" are you not at the dos prompt?
So, you could distribute a program designed to run on BASICLINUX,
which included a dos.bat routine to set the vga before launch.

It is a bit curious, now that monitors are routinely 1078 or better,
that the Linux terminal screen still defaults to the 25x80 screen
designed for the mono monitors running at 17khz.

I have seen dos games and ansi artwork which would start in the
standard 25, but then switch to 40 col, or again to 50x80, or
whatever, which it would appear, cannot be converted, much less
run, in Linux because of this "permission" issue.
