It's a kernel problem. You need a 2.0.39 (or newer) kernel
to mount the BL2 partition. So, if you boot the BL1.8 ramdisk
with the zimage from BL2, it should work (except for the
modules). I think Chris is going to use a 2.0.39 kernel for
the next version of BL1, so that problem should disappear.

No it's because sparse-super is the current default for ext2
filesystems. The older kernels (2.0.38 and below) don't
understand sparse-super.

When I installed BL2 on my system, I ran mke2fs from BL1.
So that partition is still mountable from BL1.
