So we really have no idea what the term means?

Comparing the root QSM to, what I think, are its variants

*GDM, GZM, G$M
XTM, XSM, X$M, XTM
KSM, KTM
QDM, *QTM, QSM

or

גדם*, גזם, גשם
חטם, חסם, חשם, חתם
קדם, קטם*, קסם

makes me think that QASAM is creating or conjuring something that appears, or is suggested to be, substantial, material or realistic; or using something that has bulk (as in Nu. 22:7, U-QSAM-IYM B-YAD-AM, unless 'in their hands' is metaphoric).

I doubt that M-NAXE$ is related to NAXA$, 'snake'. Some think that M-ONEN (Deut. 18:10) is a looker at clouds, but this is also doubtful.
