Appears to me that these endings are a contracted HINO, 'he is'. Thus, Gola-an = 'highland', from the root GL, Shar-on = 'lowland', from the toot Y$R, Xor-on = 'mountainous land', from the root XR = HR. Also, XAL-ON, 'widow', from the root XL, KL, etc. Also *ACL-AN, 'idler'.

Greetings,
I've noticed for some time that many places names/regions in the Land of
Israel end with either -ahn or -on.
So we have Golan, Bashan, Emek Dotan and we have Shomron, Sheemron, Xoron,
Sharon, Eglon, Giv'on, Beit Dagon, Xetzron, Avdon.
Were 'ahn' and 'on' suffixes meant to be geographical identifiers?
