1. It is very relevant here because it proves that Hebrew works perfectly well without "gemination", without "different" schwas, etc.
2. No, the dagesh makes no difference at all. You possibly occasionally seem to hear the faint natural doubling of ANY consonant preceded and followed by a vowel.

What you hear in the modern language is irrelevant here.
But out of curiosity, can't you tell the difference
between 'hem danu' ( they discussed/judged ) and 'anachnu
dannu" (we discussed/judged )? Doesn't a dagesh sneak into
the latter occasionally in normal speech?
