Actually, there is archaeological evidence and textual evidence, though
sparse.

For example, there was a conference yesterday at Bar Ilan dedicated to
Hanan Eshel, where Aharon Dempsky interpreted the pieces of this
evidence regarding literacy, though referring the audience to his
published works for fuller discussion.
