Hello all:
Cuneiform, hurrian, uratean, etc., routinely cited here as inspiration for
understanding the biblical hebrew language.
And yet the one cognate language (septuagingt) expressing the same text
as masoretic, regularly rejected.
Witness for example, but without limitation, numbers 32:38. The central and
operative verb here, מוסבת , translates as "ones being caused turned about;"
or in the context of the succeeding word, שם , means "names being changed."
And yet the septuagint renders the verb implicitly as "walls surrounding."
The english translations accept the hebrew rendering and reject the greek,
here and elsewhere across the masoretic text.
Why is the younger hebrew manuscript elevated above the older greek
manuscript, especially in light of the general reference here to
numerous other cognate languages as source material for understanding the
hebrew text?
regards,
