[b-hebrew] Motivation for Vocalizing the Hebrew Old Testament Text
Is it basically true that the early Masoretic texts merely vocalized the
consonantal text to agree with whatever Jewish tradition of pronunciation
existed at the particular time the Masoretes were doing their work.

It depends how you read your question. 'merely' ?
Canonical vocalizations tend to be very conservative and are often
different from the way in which a language would be spoken in normal
speech.
But in any case, you are asking a different question than that of thread,
which is the motivation.
