Dear Karl, Shoshanna and Harold,

Look at TWOT, Volume 1, pages 302-304, articles "Hanan," "Hen," "Hinnam,"
"hannun," "Hanina," "TeHinna," and "Tahanun" by Louis Goldberg. The verb
has several meanings, "Be gracious, ; pity; in Hithpael stem "to beseech,
implore." Derivatives have favor, grace (Hen); freeely, for nothing
(Hinnam); grace (Hin, only in Job 41:4); gracious (Hannun); favor (Hanina);
supplication (both TeHinna & tahanun). It is used in the Qal 61 times,
Hithpael 17 times, Hopal, Piel and Niphal once each and the Polel twice.

41 times in the Qal is Yahweh the subject. The plea "be gracious to me," is
found 17 times in Psalms. Synonyms of Hanan are Hesed and Rahum.

Hen is found 43 of 69 times with idea of "to find favor in the eyes of," 7x
with "give" and 3 times with "to obtain.." 14 times are independent uses of
the word. Its focus is on the recipient, of what is given versus Hanan
which focuses on the subject. The majority of the uses are purely secular in
nature, but some theological uses are found in Gen 6:8, 39:21, Exod 3:21,
11:3, 12:36, 33:12.

Rev. Bryant J. Williams III
