Yes, Karl, most students of the subject would agree with you about what
you call 'the third theory', and in part they would also accept 'the
fourth".
It is impossible here to go into detail, but it is important to keep in
mind that the MT, despite its relative lateness still maintains many features
of the North West Canaanite branch which BH represented. And, apart from the
pronounciation changes that occurred over the generations, those features
were preserved. My point is that the pronounciation of the Masoretes was not
an arbitrary caprice.

Hebrew was spoken at their time. They do not represent the pronunciation of
Biblical Hebrew, rather they reflect the pronunciation tradition 500 - 1000
years after Hebrew ceased to be spoken as a primary language (learned at
mother's knee).
A fourth theory is that the pointings reflect Biblical pronunciation. But
even here there are some variations, as there were no hard and fast spelling
rules during Biblical times.
I think those are all the theories (I expect to be strongly corrected if I
left out anyone's theory). From these, none will have a good set of rules
exactly how to point words in each context.
I personally ascribe to the third theory. ...."

By the way, the rabbis had the same problem, and calculated that there were
only 210 years from Jacob's descent to Egypt until the exodus. There
solution was the well-known midrash that God had originally intended that
the Israelites spend 430 years in Egypt, but since they cried to him so
feverently He gave them "time off" and recalculated the 430 years from
Abraham's first visit in Egypt.
