Dear Brian,
I don´t know how you appreciate the degree of speculation. I hold the
commonly held opinion than also to a high degree speculative since it
introduces assumptions on a form of monotheism at Sinai we have realy the
manifestation thereof only much later/ and this not in an ideal state of
purity but in a state of conflict with other co-existing traditions. To
assume which of the traditions has the right on the greater antiquity is the
real 50% argument but in both directions.
I suppose you do not observe you are speculating too because you´re reading
in a very onesided book in a clearly existing contemporary polemic at the
time of its writing. You have no idea What the concurents may have held to be
correct. They polemised too but we don´t posses their version of the story.
If you assume they gave the other side right with all their theoretical and
historical claims you are surely falser than I am.
It is like all revolutionary theories: they are looking everywhere for
ancestors of their ideas. But the ancestors can not refute such claims.

Best regards
